Photo 1-9. Broken anchor weld at entrance to North B Tunnel. (Anchor #20). Weld looks bad. The weld should have penetrated the pipe material and anchor so that there is one continuous metal bond of equal strength between pipe material, weld material, and anchor. The neatness of the tear along the weld material indicates the weakness of the weld. The Engineering Drawings indicate on sheet M-50, “Anchor Detail ‘C’”, 7/16” filet welds between pipe and anchor. A 7/16” throat on a filet weld indicates a weld about 5/8” wide and high. The weld material shown in this picture measures about .25” wide. |
